10 Simple Ways To Use Social Content – Guy Kawasaki and Peg Fitzpatrick
10 Simple Ways to Effectively Use Social Content from Guy Kawasaki and Peg Fitzpatrick – SXSW 2015
Social content marketing can be confusing if you want it to be. However, there are some pretty simple ways to use social media as an effective tool for branding, awareness, marketing and more. Guy Kawasaki and social ninja Peg Fitzpatrick shared 10 ways to get the most out of social media at SXSW 2015. Want to know more? Check out their book, The Art of Social Media: Power Tips for Power Users.
#1 – Be Valuable
It’s not about what you want to say, it’s more about what your audience wants to hear. Think, how can I be valuable to the people who watch me, follow me and re-share me. Guy advises that every post you write should inform, assist or entertain.
Guy suggests you do the “re-share test”. Ask yourself, is this post so good that it not only assists the people I’m sharing with, but it’s so good that they want to share it with others.
Why is NPR so successful in their fund raising? They provide so much value throughout the year that once a year they have a pledge drive to raise money. You are guilt-ed into giving money since they’ve already given so much to you.
#2 – Be Clever
Be clever about feeding the content monster, you don’t have to write everything yourself. There are so many other people and services aggregating content you can use that content and share it with others.
See what’s popular and just share that and take advantage of lists, circles and communities.
#3 – Be Gracious
Share other people’s content but mention them and give them credit! Also, don’t rant and bash others online. Be positive or stay silent.
#4 – Be Organized
There’s so much more to posting content than going to Twitter and clicking “Tweet”. Use tools such as Hootsuite, Sprout Social, Facebook mentions, Buffer and others to organize and mainstream your social life.
Part of good organization is to be consistent – create consistently good content.
#5 – Be Dramatic
Your content should not be boring, but use good visuals. Add text on images and share user generated content.

Part of being optimal is to have a good avatar (or head shot). Guy suggests you don’t need to show your entire body in the photo – just a nice head shot that shows people who you are.
Your picture is so important online. So make a good one – not one that sucks.
#7 – Be Bold
Show your passions (it’s ok to show yourself skiing or baking – it’s what you love). Also be topical and timely. If there’s a big news story – share it with others.
#8 – Don’t be Clueless
Buying fans and followers to boost your social following is a bad idea. Build a trusted list, an organic list of people who really trust and want your information. Don’t ask people to reshare your posts. Just do good posts and people will want to share them. Interns and outside agencies are great – but don’t give up doing your own social engagement for someone else to do it for you.
#9 – Be Active
Experiment a bit and try new things. Also, Guy HIGHLY suggests you do repeat your Tweets. Peg said the life of a Tweet is but a few minutes, one Tweet is NOT seen by most of your followers, so share it a few times.
#10 – Be Curious
When new platforms come to the market – test them out and try them. It’s very hard to get a large following once there’s lots of people on a platform. Log out of your social networks and see how it looks to others.
