How to Boost Your Creativity

It’s hard to be creative all the time.

In fact, it’s impossible. Sarah Urist Green, curator, arts educator, producer, and author of You Are an Artist: Assignments to Spark Creation, has some tips to boost your creativity and lift the creative wall holding you back.

  1. Remind yourself that all of us are creative
  2. Understand how creativity works in your brain
  3. Take breaks intentionally
  4. Don’t try to force yourself to work through it
  5. When you feel well-rested, start by doing

Book – Play Nice But Win

In Michael Dell’s memoir Play Nice But Win: A CEO’s Journey from Founder to Leader, he details his journey as the founder and CEO of Dell Technologies.

The book features his core value of doing well by doing good, as well as his leadership style where everyone involved thrives.

Dell shows how he remained true to his principles while revealing the topsy turvy journey of business and entrepreneurship he experienced while building Dell.

A New Look for the Office

With recent estimates stating that nearly half of workers will be remote or working on a hybrid schedule in the future, it comes as no surprise that the office is getting remodeled. CEO Jack Kelly makes some suggestions for rethinking office spaces:

  1. Make the office seem like a high-end boutique or a private club
  2. More video screens to communicate with a distanced workforce
  3. Reserve certain days for those working from home who want to come into the office and see co-workers
  4. Places for guest speakers

A Nonprofit to Help the Animals of the Elderly and Terminally Ill

When Angela Rafuse’s grandfather passed away, she ended up taking Mackenzie, her grandmother’s cat.

Rafuse’s grandfather had been taking care of the cat until his death.

While Mackenzie didn’t seem to love Angela, the two created a bond that eventually went viral on TikTok, prompting Angela to tell viewers her story.

Many fans responded with stories of how their relatives’ animals were placed in shelters when they were no longer able to care for them.

Angela saw a need, and she created My Grandfather’s Cat, a nonprofit that helps terminally ill people and seniors who are moving into assisted living find new forever homes for their pets. The nonprofit has found homes for 25 cats and one dog.

Let’s hear about some GOOD NEWS

Podcast – “A Slight Change of Plans”

Maya Shankar’s new podcast “A Slight Change of Plans” mixes storytelling and science to really explain why we act in certain ways when things change

Cognitive scientist & Creator of A Slight Change of Plans — Apple’s “Best Show of the Year 2021”! —

Stars like Kacey Musgraves and Tiffany Haddish talk about how they dealt with changes, and scientists such as Adam Grant and Katy Milkman share tips for how to live happier lives

There are also true stories of people like Daryl, an African-American jazz musician who convinces hundreds of members of the KKK to leave, and a woman who becomes a PI to investigate her son’s death.

What is Self-Gaslighting?

When you face a conflict, do you somehow convince yourself that you overreacted?

Do you dismiss your own feelings?

That is self-gaslighting, where you invalidate and doubt your emotions and reality.

Here’s how to stop according to clinical therapist Brit Barkholtz and licensed clinical psychologist Katelyn Campbell:

  1. Therapy (if available)
  2. Try to become aware of self-gaslighting thoughts and identify them
  3. Find resources
  4. Commit to validating your thoughts without judging them
  5. Talk to yourself like you would a friend

Let’s hear about some GOOD NEWS

How the COVID variants are named

We’ve experience the delta variant of COVID-19, the mu variant, and we’re in the midst of the omicron variant.

But why did we decide to start naming variants after Greek letters?

Each virus is named scientifically.

That’s why COVID-19 is actually known as SARS-CoV-2.

Every variant is also categorized and named separately, which can get hard to track.

Greek letters make it easier to keep up with the variants.

Some Greek letters were skipped – nu, for example, since it is pronounced like “new.”

If we get to the end of the Greek alphabet, prefix letters will be added to the new strains. Hopefully we don’t make it there.

LinkedIn Tests Audio Rooms

LinkedIn saw an increase in live events hosted on its platform over the past few years, and now it’s improving itself.

The business networking platform is launching an audio events space where users can join live discussions.

They can raise a virtual hand to join as a speaker or post likes in a chat.

The platform is also expanding to be able to host video events and single user live-streams.

How to Always Give a Great Toast

Toasts are either really great or really bad.

No matter where you’re giving a toast at, here’s an acronym with tips to make sure your toast is a good one according to author and speaker Ramona J. Smith.

T – Tell a story

O – Optimistic

A – Authenticity and vulnerability over humor

S – Speeches require practice

T – Timing. The shorter the better

How a Software Engineer Paid Off 60k of Debt in One Year

Nickolas Natali graduated college with a software engineering degree, along with $59,000 worth of debt.

With five direct loans and interest rates anywhere from 4.5% to 8.5%, Natali wanted to get rid of those loans fast.

Natali took some drastic measures to pay off his debt in just one year, including living in a van.

While not everyone can or should live out of a van, here’s the other things he did to get rid of debt.

  1. He tracked every dollar he spent
  2. He worked as much overtime as possible
  3. While it was rough, Natali was thankful for his time in the van.

Using Compersion to Overcome Jealousy

How do you deal with jealousy?

Have you tried using compersion, instead of comparison?

According to relationship coach Joli Hamilton, compersion is when you are happy about the happiness of others, even if the reason they are happy isn’t something you can have right now.

When you see someone having a great success at work or mastering a skill, instead of feeling jealous, try and muster up some compersion. It goes a long way.

TV in New Flavors?

Have you ever seen a commercial for some food that looked so good you could practically taste it? Well, with the help of Japanese professor Homei Miyashita’s Taste the TV, you can.

Miyashita developed a prototype of a lickable TV screen that uses 10 flavor canisters to imitate food flavors. The canisters spray together to recreate a food’s tastes, which is rolled on hygienic film on top of a flat screen TV.

The professor wants to make a platform where users can download tastes from around the world.

Is Your Dog Bilingual?

The study also determined that the older your dog is, the better their brain is at detecting unfamiliar languages. Talk about teaching an old dog new tricks, right?

Ways to Cook at Home More

You can do a lot in the kitchen, and if you’re trying to cook at home more, here’s some tips to help you turn your kitchen into an establishment worthy of a Michelin star.

  1. Do big things with small ingredients (onions, fresh herbs, citrus)
  2. Utilize your leftovers (vegetable stock, stale bread)
  3. Talk to the butcher
  4. Keep it simple
  5. Use sauces and reductions
  6. Commit
  7. Use your freezer
  8. Get your kids to help

How to Get Your Ideas Heard At Work

Imagine this: you’re in a meeting, ready to share your great idea. You start your sentence – only to get talked over and ignored. If you want to avoid that scenario, then try amplifying one another’s ideas. Here’s how that strategy plays out:

  1. One person brings up a point or an idea.
  2. The idea is immediately repeated and commended by another person.
  3. The idea is moved forward by a third person.

You can plan this with coworkers in advance, before meetings take place. This way, there’s no negative associations attached to you or anyone else for defending your ideas, which is an added bonus.

5 Mindless Habits Making You More Irritable

It’s always easier to focus on the negatives. That’s just how our brains are wired. But sometimes, the way you deal with negatives only makes you more irritable. Here’s some of the mindless habits making your bad mood worse:

  1. Not eating when you’re hungry
  2. Binge-watching emotionally-trying TV before bed
  3. Staying inside all day long
  4. Checking notifications on your phone as soon as you get them

First Cambodian American Mayor assumes Post

When Sokhary Chau, a city councilor in Lowell, Massachusetts, was chosen to become the mayor, he made history as the first Cambodian American mayor in the United States. He is also Lowell’s first Asian American mayor.

Chau emigrated to the US with his mother and siblings during the civil war in Cambodia in the 1970s. His father was executed by the Khmer Rouge in 1975.

During his inaugural speech, Chau told other Cambodians in the audience, “‘It is our time now to be leaders and to succeed.’”

Viral Pizza Hack

You know those little white pizza savers when you order a pizza?

Well, while they were invented to keep a pizza from being demolished by the top of the box, they can also be used as a makeshift serving tool.

Food influencer Chris Franzoni shared the hack on his TikTok, which went viral.

By using the plastic legs of the pizza saver to hold down the other slices of pizza, you can grab the slice you want with one hand.

The kicker? You don’t touch anyone else’s slice.

How to Reduce Stress by Focusing More

When you’re stressed or hurting, how do you cope?

Do you try to distract yourself?

Have you tried focusing on the problem more?

Jon Kabat-Zinn, the founder of mindfulness-based stress reduction, says that’s exactly what we need to do to manage our negative reactions to stress.

Kabat-Zinn believes that we should cultivate awareness and living in the moment in our day to day life.

What is mindfulness?

It’s the awareness that arises from paying attention on purpose in the present moment, nonjudgmentally.

Woman Graduates College With Her 88 Year Old Grandfather

23 year old Melanie Salazar celebrated an extra-special graduation from University of Texas at San Antonio with her classmate – her 88 year old grandfather Rene Neira. Just a few days ago.

Neira graduated with a degree of recognition in economics, and Salazar received her degree in communications.

In 2017, the pair graduated from Palo Alto College together before going to UTSA.

They didn’t take classes together, but they did eat lunch or study together.

Neira did sometimes attend meetings of a club at UTSA where Salazar was president.

Let’s hear about some GOOD NEWS

Decision fatigue and how can you combat it?

  • Hard to make decisions with the pandemic and life in general
  • Everyone struggles with big decisions such as taking a new job, moving or starting a business
  • Also little decisions like what to eat or what to wear?

According to a 2021 survey by the American Psychological Association, about one-third of adults struggle with basic decisions. This is called decision fatigue.

So what can you do?

  1. Take a look at the intensity of your decision.
    1. Is the thing you’re deciding on really important?
    2. Try to analyze the situation with context clues.
  2. Don’t make individual decisions.
    1. Instead, find principles that can apply to the situation and default to them.
  3. Phone a friend. Ask the opinion of five separate people who are uninvolved third parties. They shouldn’t have a stake in your decision, so they can give you unbiased advice.

Zebras on the Loose

We see dogs on the loose all the time, but what about zebras?

In August, two zebras escaped from a farm in Maryland, and they weren’t captured until December! That’s right, everybody – it took four months to capture them.

Local residents began a sort of “spot the zebras” campaign by posting pictures of the two animals on social media. The animals even had a Twitter parody account that tweeted out, “Well, Well, Well…they got us. We had an amazing time and it’s all about being outside.

Let’s hear about some GOOD NEWS

Tips for Avoiding Burnout in the Office

We’ve all heard about burnout, and most of us have probably experienced it to some degree.

Burnout is a hard thing to overcome, but workplace wellness expert Jennifer Moss has a few tips for overcoming burnout in the workplace.

  1. Know the signs

First, you have to recognize the signs of burnout. Prevention is a lot easier than trying to recover, and knowing key factors of burnout – like how often you’re feeling exhausted, cynical, or disengaged – can help.

  1. Take Breaks

Hustling is great, but you can’t hustle forever without taking a break. At least take a break every few hours to recharge and refocus, which can help you prevent or overcome burnout.

  1. Unplug

Digital detoxes are great weapons in the fight against burnout. Taking a break from your phone, tablet or computer can give you a chance to recover from an onslaught of information. Take that time to go outside – the vitamin D will boost your mood!

  1. Set Boundaries

Finally, setting boundaries is a great way to separate work and home life, especially if you’re working from home. Set a time to be done answering emails, and then stick to that time. Those emails you get at nine o’clock at night? They’ll just have to wait until you’re back in the office.

Stumped New York Jeopardy Contestant Gets a Second Chance at Clue

Thank goodness for second chances, am I right?

When the episode for the TV quiz show Jeopardy aired on December 29, no one could respond to the clue that read “In 2021, she became the first female governor of New York state.” That included New York resident and contestant Ben Walthall.

He got a chance to redeem himself though, when he was featured during Governor Kathy Hochul’s virtual COVID-19 briefing. He was asked the question again, and he made sure he knew the answer the second time around. Hochul told Walthall she didn’t “have a long memory,” so they were cool.

Silencing Negative Self-Talk

Isn’t it easy to talk bad about yourself?

I know I’ve done it.

It’s not hard to stare at yourself in the mirror after a bad presentation or a failed opportunity and obsess over your flaws.

Instead of using yourself as a punching bag, ask yourself this question: Would I talk to my best friend this way?

I’m willing to bet that you wouldn’t. If your friend had made the same mistakes as you, you would probably be treating them with grace and gentleness. How about you use some of that grace and gentleness for yourself?

When you look in the mirror or mess something up or lose out on an opportunity, don’t be your own villain. Instead, be your own best friend.

Author Wendy Speake explains how she developed a closer relationship with God after overcoming her sugar addiction which she had been turning to for comfort in the face of life’s difficulties, and challenges listeners to pursue spiritual transformation by overcoming their own addictions. Jim Daly’s wife, Jean, joins the conversation to share her personal experiences.

Stop Tracking Spending and Other Money Tasks to Take Off Your To-Do List

  1. Don’t rush to pay off a low-interest mortgage – Elliot Pepper, a financial planner in Baltimore, encourages clients to think about putting extra money in investments that will perform better than the interest rate cost of their mortgage. That’s especially true for those who have recently refinanced a mortgage, he said.
  2. Don’t overpay for items because ‘supplies are limited’ – Don’t track your spending – Tracking every last dollar of your monthly spending can feel empowering at first but is hard to sustain, like a crash diet, said Kenny Senour, a financial planner in Denver.

What a Science Teacher Taught the Dallas Cowboys About Coaching

Ruthanne “Rudi” Thompson and Adam Fein had absolutely no background in football. But their roles at the University of North Texas happened to make them vital resources for an NFL team conducting business in the middle of a pandemic.

They’re experts in virtual learning and responsible for thousands of courses that tens of thousands of students have taken online since the Covid-19 pandemic began in 2020.

The Cowboys and every other team learned just how painful that process could be last season. Covid could hit at any moment and force a team to shutter its facility and conduct virtual meetings. Coaches would have to teach complicated plays and schemes on video calls when there was an outbreak, or even a sign of one.

It went poorly enough that the Cowboys didn’t want to be unprepared if the same situation arose in 2021.
